For those planning to travel within or outside the United States, having the proper documentation is an essential requirement. Security regulations at airports have been updated, and now it is mandatory to present certain documents in order to board commercial flights, whether domestic or international.

Passengers traveling within the United States must present a valid identification that meets federal security standards. One of the accepted documents is the U.S. passport, which is not only essential for those traveling abroad, but can also be used on domestic flights. Another option is the passport card, a smaller and more compact version of the traditional document, valid for certain border crossings and journeys within the country.

For residents in states that offer enhanced driver's licenses (EDL), this identification allows entry to the United States by land and sea from Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean. For lawful permanent residents, the Permanent Resident Card, known as the Green Card, is an indispensable requirement for both domestic travel within the U.S. and international trips.

In addition, workers in the transportation industry who need access to restricted areas in airports must have a Transportation Worker Identification Credential, a document issued specifically for those performing functions in this sector.

Another alternative available to expedite the entry and exit process of the country are cards from trusted traveler programs, such as Global Entry, SENTRI, NEXUS, and FAST. These documents are designed for pre-approved passengers seeking to reduce waiting times at immigration and security checkpoints at U.S. airports.

Starting in 2025, the REAL ID Act will come into effect, which will require all driver's licenses and identification cards used for flights within the United States to meet federal security standards. This means that passengers must ensure that their license or identification has the REAL ID seal to avoid inconveniences when traveling.

Authorities have warned that those without an ID compliant with REAL ID will not be able to board commercial flights within the country. Therefore, it is advisable to verify in advance whether the driver's license issued by their state complies with these new requirements or if it needs to be renewed.
